The Iola Portland Cement Company was the largest cement plant in the United States when it was built in 1900. It hired 900 men at its peak and created its own town, Bassett, for its employees. The plant was sold to LeHigh in 1917 and provided Iola's largest industrial payroll until it ceased operations in 1970. |
